How to fix a Toilet

How to Fix a Toilet that is Clogged

Hopefully your parents taught you how to fix a toilet that is plugged up long before you moved out. If not, have no fear, all you usually need is a plunger and a little know-how. First of all, how do you know if the toilet is clogged?   Simple; if you are pressing down on the handle and water is going into the bowl, but not draining, then you’ve got a clog. First thing how to fix a toilet clog; if your clog is about to overflow onto the floor, shut off the water using the water shut-off valve located on the wall near the back of your toilet. It should be hooked up to what looks like a metal hose.Once you’ve got the water situation under control (and sometimes that means letting the bowl drain a little bit so that you don’t slosh water out of the bowl while you’re using your plunger) that’s when you come in with the plunger. However you do need enough water to cover the head of the plunger while you’re plunging the toilet, so if necessary, add some water with a bucket. Push the plunger down and pull it back up, but not all the way. You’re trying to create a seal and push or pull whatever is stuck so that it’s unstuck. Do this several times, then try flushing the toilet again (which means turning the water back on if it’s off). If it’s still clogged, try again. Sometimes it takes several goes with the plunger.
